In a collaborative project with Interpretive Specialist Ranger Jim Lewis and Education Coordinator Ranger John McKay at Stones River National Battlefield and Cemetery, I conducted research on privates Henry Harrison Whitehill and Levi M. Boyer of Company E of the 78th Pennsylvania Infantry of the Union for the purposes of adding a stop to the Hallowed Ground: Lantern Tours of Stones River National Cemetery program. Focusing on a letter written by Boyer to the family of Whitehill after his death, I gave guidelines on how to interpret his experience, focusing on the soldiers’ experiences with death, burial, and hardship during the Civil War.
